Farmers and other agvet chemical users across South Australia have continued to support the drumMUSTER program which has resulted in the 4 millionth chemical drum recently being delivered to the Kapunda collection site.

The Kapunda collection site is now managed by the Kapunda Shed group who are raising funds to support their activities and the work that they do around town. The group ran its first collection at the Kapunda Materials Recovery Centre following a number of members attending a drumMUSTER inspector training course in July 2014. Since that time the group has inspected over 13,000 containers raising more than $3000.00 for the Kapunda Shed.

Tim Harris – past Chairman of the group said ”Our group manages the waste facilities each weekend which includes inspecting drums for drumMUSTER. It’s a nice little earner for our group and provides a great service for the farming community”

Andrew Philpott –Environmental Project Officer, Light Regional Council commented “Light Regional Council’s Environmental Project Officer, Mr Andrew Philpott commented “The Council is pleased to have the dedicated volunteers from the Kapunda Shed looking after the drumMUSTER program. Prior to its involvement the Council could only support a collection once or twice per year and this did not always suit farmers.  The service has been provided each Sunday for the past few years however since July this year the Council changed the opening times to include Saturdays also. The expanded service has seen an increase in drums being delivered which is a win for the environment”

South Australian drumMUSTER Regional Consultant Stewart McIntosh has been hard at work throughout the state in a bid to increase container return rates.

“We have recently seen better returns on the Eyre peninsula following the attendance at a couple of field days. At these events I discussed the obligations of farmers to maintain a clean environment and the duty they have to maintain their properties in an environmentally responsible way. This has also assisted in reaching this significant milestone.” he said.

Established in late 1998, the drumMUSTER program is run in conjunction with local councils and other organisations to host collection sites for empty and pre-cleaned agricultural and veterinary chemical containers. Since inception more than 28 million containers representing over 33,000 tonnes of products have been collected for recycling.

The collected products are recycled into a multitude of products from fence posts and bollards to garden furniture and garden stakes.
